When did poll taxes start?

Poll taxes originated in the late 19th century, primarily as a means to disenfranchise African American voters and poor white citizens in the United States. They were implemented after the Reconstruction era, with many Southern states adopting them around the 1890s. Poll taxes were used to restrict voting access until they were declared unconstitutional in federal elections by the 24th Amendment in 1964 and later ruled unconstitutional in all elections by the Supreme Court in 1966.
