How do mountains get their names?

Many are named after the person who discovered them. Some are given their 'local' name (the name of the mountain in the culture that lives nearby or on it). Others are named for famous people in the discoverer's or the native people's history. A few are simply numbered - K2 is the most famous of these; it does have official names in some documents, but is rarely used.
