What if your passport has expired but your not sure if its a child or an adult passport so do you just apply for a new adult passport regardless?

Child passport ONLY differ in the expiry date (e.g. UK and US are valid for only 5 years instead of 10- which is for adults). If you have the minimum age for adult passport, then you should apply for an adult passport.
