Can Effexor and zoloft be taken together?

Generally speaking, these drugs are not used together. Zoloft affects a chemical in the body called serotonin. Effexor affects serotonin, but also norepinephrine. Occasionally, a specialist (psychiatrist) may prescribe the combo under close supervision in an attempt to perfectly tweak the ratio of these two chemicals. This is rare, however, and patients should only use the combination if specifically instructed to do so. Side effects of the two drugs are significantly overlapping. The combination may also lead to a rare but serious condition known as serotonin syndrome, which much be monitored for by the patient and prescriber.
