As an American, we enjoy many rights. In fact, we enjoy ALL rights and freedoms except those that our forefathers saw fit to surrender to the common good of a working nation. For instance, you have the right to say what you want, unless you decide you want to yell "fire" in a movie theatre, or "this is a stick-up" in a bank.

Go down the Bill of Rights. Nine of those apply to the individual (the other applies to the rights of states). Note that the Bill of Rights is written with a certain recurring phrase: "Congress shall pass no law..." That means that the right is inherent to the individual and cannot/ should not be infringed upon by the government.
