What should you do if you got stuck in quicksand?

Real quicksand is a slurry of sand (dirt) in water,
so if all else fails (a rope, a branch, friends) you should be able to swim out.
But some guy got caught in a construction site (yes - they made their own quicksand ... for waste disposal purposes) and it took a score of guys plus water pumps to get him out.
