Being competent in math is very helpful when working as a carpenter. If you know the proper math formulas you can often build things with less information and therefore quicker. Say I am on the ground and you are in the air nailing cut to fit pieces of plywood on a gable end of a roof. If I know how to figure the rise of the roof over the span of the pieces of plywood I will never have to ask you to measure the height where the new board meets the last installed board then ask you to measure over 4 feet and level up that line and measure the height of the cut at that point....I will have already cut the board and you dont have to stand there on a scaffold staring at my ass while i cut the board because by the time you install one I already figured and cut the next. Being able to do things right the first time counts alot in construction and if you can do that then your boss wont have any problem justifying that raise you just asked him for.
