Aurorae are just ionized, or at least excitedgases high in the atmosphere. Their colour indicates which element is involved, usually oxygen, or nitrogen.
They are caused by emissions from the Sun, and these also cause wild fluctuations in the Earth's magnetic field. A major storm may even induce sufficiently large currents in extended power lines as to burn out the Transformers. They will also affect radio communication, and the currents may kill the circuits in a satellite.
So though not a danger to humans at a personal level, they may well destroy equipment and cause major disruptions to civilization.
