it wasn't always catholocism. the native Mexican people had their own religions. They were much like ancient egyptians, in that they worshipped sun gods and animals. These were people very advanced in Astrology and math, also architecture.

Look into ancient Mayan and Aztec cultures. Human sacrifice was common and the lifestyle of the people revolved around the community. Religion was the way of life.
