Why would guy friend ask you about your relationship status?

That depends. If he begins to act flirtatious around you, he clearly wants to be with you. Whereas if he asks you this in a conversation that seems to be going nowhere, he may just be making small talk. Being a guy myself, however, I wouldn't ask a girl her "relationship status" as small talk.
