He came out in either the late thirties or during the War ( World War II). Rudolph was a feature ad act for Montgomery Wards Christmas catalogs- to get the kids to turn the pages towards the toy sections! Thus, he began as an advertising mascot akin to, say Geoffery Giraffe of Toys R Us fame.
