The first official, federally-issued US cents were struck in 1793.

There were various experimental pieces made the year before, and a number of private, trial, and state-issued cents were minted before that. It's sometimes argued that the first cent is the so-called "Fugio" cent issued in 1787 under the authority of the Continental Congress and reportedly designed by Benjamin Franklin.
