Expansionism helps the United States grow as a country, and expansion into the Philippines would grant more power to the United States as a world leader. The Filipinos were considered to be a "barbarous" people incapable of self governance. It was argued that after rescue from Spanish rule, we could not simply leave the Philippines out in the cold to ultimately fail without assistance from a superior civilization. Some Imperialists argued that it was our duty to share our blessings and better way of life with those lesser than us. Proponents included Alfred Beveridge, an Indiana Senator, as well as other Progressives.
