Gargoyles are simply decorative drain holes seen on the side of buildings.. In England particularly in the middle ages they were shaped like demons or angels or animals with the mouth an opening to allow the water to drain off say a church roof. I would think they were probably invented in lots of places by builders who wanted their buildings to look nice..
