George Washington was given command of the Continental Army on June 15, 1775.

Other leaders in the Revolutionary War included Nathaniel Greene, Horatio Gates, George Rogers Clark, Henry Knox, Daniel Morgan, John Sullivan, Anthony Wayne, and Benedict Arnold. From France came the Marquis de Lafayette and from Prussia, Baron Friedrich von Steuben. Another foreign leader was Colonel Tadeusz Kościuszko of Poland.
