What does backcourt violation mean?

A backcourt violation in Basketball occurs when an offensive team, after gaining possession of the ball, crosses the midcourt line and then returns the ball to the backcourt without it being touched by the defensive team. This rule is designed to keep the game moving and prevent teams from stalling. If a backcourt violation is called, the opposing team is awarded possession of the ball.
