But since you asked, I'll tell you anyway (indeed, this site is full of easy quesitons, easily answered). In an electric circuit, electricity has to flow in two directions. It flows outward from the generator in the hot wire, and simultaneously back to the generator through the ground. With a ski life, the skiers go up the lift and then ski down the slope; you can't have them going in only one direction. They only go up so that they can ski down, and they can't ski down unless they first go up.
