"What You See Is What You Get". The term came about because most early Word processing software displayed generic typefaces on the screen, while the printers of the day were capable of printing several different fonts. The WYSIWIG software would display the document on the screen just as it would be printed out on the page. With the advent of TrueType Fonts and Microsoft Windows Version 3, nearly every Windows program could display WYSIWYG.
