What are candy's reasons for not wanting to shoot the dog?

He thinks the dog is old and smells bad, and therefore wants to put the dog out of his misery by killing him. The dog also can't really perform any tasks because it is half-blind,can barley walk and its an inconveinece. But in a way if you think about it, its kind of an excuse because he might be jealous that he doesn't have a companion like he does, especially since its a dog.
