Hi There, the Termini area is indeed safe for tourists and families. If your hotel is located in that area, I would not worry about safety. If you are considering going to hand out in the evening, that might not be such a great idea - only because there isn't much to do, and you will see many immigrants, etc hanging around in the immediate Piazza Vittorio area. It's not exactly a destination, but is safe for lodging, eating, and very conveniently located close to the train station.
