Why do scientists spend a lot of time reading research papers of other scientists?

There may be 3 different kind of answers, one is, may be because they want to compare their experiments or observation to the other scientists other one is, may be because they want to know or observe the works of other scientists...and the last one is, they may want to use it in good or bad things...^_^ hope it helped ya' !!
