The pardoner is at least honest about his dishonesty?

I am assuming that you are familiar with the Pardoner -- from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. He tells a story (as do each of the pilgrims) but before he does, he tells a bit about himself. He explains how he is effective at getting people to repent of their sins by preaching about how "greed is the root of all evil" while also pointing out that he himself is greedy and makes money off of other people's sins. He also says that despite being a sinner himself, he is able to help others repent of their sins by his preaching. In other Words, he admits that he is dishonest (in condemning sinners when he is one--a fact that he hides from the parishoners)...but there is candor in admitting one's own dishonesty.
