The son of a white master and a slave who founded the Atlanta Life Insurance Company was Alonzo Herndon. Born into slavery in 1858, he rose to prominence as a successful businessman and entrepreneur in the early 20th century. Herndon established the insurance company in 1905, which became one of the largest African American-owned insurance companies in the United States, providing services to the Black community during a time of widespread discrimination. His achievements made him a significant figure in the economic empowerment of African Americans.
