Is it 'his family is' or 'his family are?

'Family' is a group noun, and whether it takes a singular or plural verb depends on whether you are thinking of the family as a unit or as a number of individuals.

'His family is one of the oldest in the county.'
'His family are all doctors.'

Like much else in English usage, context is all.
