Who discovered the Mississippi River and explored southeastern U.S.?

Two famous Frenchmen explored the Mississippi River basin in the 17th century. Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet were tasked by the French governor of the area to find a route to the Pacific Ocean in 1672.
