Who is the author of the book The Christmas Doll?

Harriett Arnow is the author of The Doll Maker. However, I read a book from the Houghton, Michigan library in1959 or 60 titled The Man In The Wood. The author was not Arnow (don't recall the name actually) but it was the exact same story and appeared to be a very old book.
