How do animals survive during winter months when the food is scarce?

They can't go in the mud in the winter because either the ground's too frozen solid to have any mud, or the mud is much too cold for them to be wallowing in. Even so, most pigs are housed indoors in the winter anyway, especially those that live where snow and cold predominates the landscape for almost half the year.
