Most times the WHITE smoke is actually steam from a coolant leak into the combustion chamber. Usually bad news (cracked head, cracked block, leaking head gasket). If it is truly smoke, (doesnt readily dissipate), then more than likely its Transmission Fluid being drawn into the carburetor through a bad vacuum modulator valve on the transmission, not uncommon on older vehicles.
