Who coined the term gothic?

The term "Gothic" was originally used in the 16th century by Italian Renaissance artists and architects to describe the medieval architecture they considered barbaric and uncivilized, associated with the Goths, a Germanic tribe. It later came to be associated with a style of literature and art that evokes a sense of the mysterious and the supernatural.
