Why Fiji was colonised?

They do not want the American to take Fiji as their own. When American Samoa was claimed to be a territory, Fijian Chiefs asked Britain if they will take the whole of Fiji and Britain agreed to claim Fiji and Rotuma as its own. This stopped the American from moving further down south and claim island(s) in the Pacific.
