Gomburza, a group of three Filipino priests—Mariano Gómez, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora—were betrayed by a combination of colonial authorities and a fellow Filipino, José Rizal's friend, who was coerced into implicating them in a conspiracy against the Spanish government. Their execution in 1872 was largely motivated by the Spanish colonial regime's desire to suppress the growing nationalist movement in the Philippines. The betrayal significantly fueled the rise of Philippine nationalism and inspired future revolutionary leaders.
