What is the difference between an insane asylum and a psych ward?

Before psychiatry or psychological treatment existed, there were insane asylums, which were essentially prisons. No one knew how to treat mental disorders, so the sufferers were locked up, probably for the dual purpose of protecting the patient from harming himself and keeping him out of the sight of society in general.
