How many large states were there in India on the verge of the partition of India?

On the verge of the partition of India in 1947, there were 11 large states, also referred to as provinces. These included Punjab, Bengal, and others, which were significant in terms of population and area. The partition led to the division of these states primarily along religious lines, resulting in the creation of India and Pakistan.
