What was Christmas Bells describing in stanzas four and five?

There are many songs that deal with Christmas Bells. I seem to think you are referring to Longfellow"s ( the bearded poet did look like Mr. Claus- but only composed ONE Christmas song- I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day- the verses you refer to made comment on the revolt and division of the South during the Civil War- ( I heard the Bells) is one of the first anti-war Christmas carols and does get off on the wrong hoof. Can"t resist a parody on the upbeat final verse- And then I saw her on my Jeep, Stacia"s not dead, nor does she sleep- the RED shall Fail , the WHITE prevail- for Stacy and her Furry Friends!
