Every month that went by, the Confederates, recruiting from a much smaller population, were finding it harder to maintain their armies at fighting strength.

After Grant became the Union General-in-Chief in March 1864, he ended the system of prisoner-exchange, to exploit this advantage to the full. The war ended when Lee's battle-lines were simply too thin to hold.
