Rice based beer does contains gluten.

The amount of gluten in rice beer is much lower than than traditional beer grains.

Though rice lacks certain enzymes that traditional beer grains - like barley or wheat -contain and which produce gluten, most rice lagers contain a certain amount of barley as well, and therefore contain gluten.

Rice based beers are traditionally lagers which from Japan and are produced by large companies such as Kirin, Sapporo and Asahi. The rice is said to define the style and flavor of the beer. These companies do not promote their beers as gluten free.

Many people who are gluten intolerant can drink rice based beer without a problem. It's a case by case scenario and is the discretion of the individual.

Some rice based beers are strictly made of rice and hops, but are not often commercially available. These are usually home brewed.
