How do you determine which fire department responds?

The simple answer, The department/apparatus closest to the emergency will respond. But there are several factors that can come into play beyond that. These factors include but are not limited to: type of emergency, special hazards (Hazardous material,type of occupancy...etc), companies already committed to other calls.
