What were two signs of selfishness in the book Night by Elie Wiesel?

The dentist being hanged was selfishness. He used to sell gold teeth for his profit. Page 38 In the end of the book, page 83, Elie says "Our first act as free men was to throw ourselves onto the provisions" and etc...
