As explained somewhere else the Word ( Scout) is indirectly evolved from the obsolete spelling of Escoutez- to Listen ( the modern French equivalent is Ecouter, the S dropped over time- this would have been pronounced- Ess-Koot-=Ayy) which does sound vaguely like the Word (Scout). The Fleur De Lis is associated with French royalty, so it would be an appropriate symbol. also it is used on some (mainly Naval) Compass indicator markers- and boxing the compass is a scoutly skill! Uncofrimed reports a variant comet- and Fleur de Lis used by the Explorer"s Club.
