Pewter dates back to Roman times, 2000+ yrs, perhaps longer. It is believed to originated in Europe. Early pewter contained 70% Tin and 30% Lead. it tarnished quite easily. Further, the Lead content tended to leach out and slowly poison users.

At present, the alloy contains no Lead, and is composed of approximately 91% Tin, 7.5% Antimony, and 1.5% copper.

Though pewter is now manufactured worldwide, since the early 16th century, Northern France, Germany and England have led in production of quality pewter products.

Getting rid of the Lead makes it safe to use in food and drink vessels.
