Carl Lewis' best long jump was 8.91 meters (29 feet, 2 3/4 inches) at the 1991 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Later in the competition, Mike Powell jumped 8.95 meters (29 feet, 4 1/2 inches) to surpass Lewis and win the gold medal.
