Why does a car's temperature gauge go up when heater is on or when the car is parked?

i had a similar problem it could be a low antifreeze level or sticky or stuck open thermostat or partially plugged rad or fan could not be working right if electric or clutch type. either way start with the simple and cheapest first if none of these check your guage.
