The Greek Word translated "deacon" in the New Testament, diakonos, literally means, "one who executes the commands of another." Specifically, as relates to the New Testament church office, deacons were to "care for the poor and have charge of and distribute the money collected for their use." In short, deacons saw to the physical needs of a congregation, while elders concentrated on the group's spiritual needs and edification.

We see the office of deacon established in the opening verses of Acts 6, and the requirements of men who would be deacons outlined in I Timothy 3.
