Choosing the correct dye is the starting point, permanent dye is obviously the longest lasting. After you've dyed your hair there are a few things that can extend the life of that color:
- Use shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. The formula will protect your hair from damage and help your hair retain the shine you had the first day you colored it.
- Use a glaze or hair mask. Either one will give your hair a boost in between colorings.
- Don't wash your hair everyday. Washing your hair strips off the protective oils that your scalp makes, and can remove some of the color. Does your hair get too oily to skip a day? Use dry shampoo, don't use product on the first day, or only skip days when you are staying home and can pull your hair back. (If you skip washing your hair every other day, it will stop being so oily on the second day.)
- Rinse in cold water. This keeps the dye in your hair and leaves your hair shiny.
