Who named Mount Whitney?

Mount Whitney was named by the California Geological Survey in 1864 after Josiah Whitney, a prominent geologist and the survey's leader. The name was given in recognition of his contributions to the study of California's geology. Prior to this, the mountain was referred to by various names, including "Sierra Nevada" and "the Great Western Peak."
