What is steal shank in a shoe?

The shank is a piece of metal or fiberglass about 4 to 5 inches long and an inch wide with a slight arch and is embedded in the middle of the sole of shoes and boots. The purpose is to prevent that part of the footwear from bending in that specific spot.
