Do words in a crossword have to be touching?

Standard puzzles have only horizontal and vertical answers. However, there are many novelty puzzles which may contain diagonals, stairsteps, reversals, flower petals and anything else the puzzler can come up with. Games magazine often features such novelty puzzles.
