Why do scienstits need govenment funding?

Sadly most government only fund science that they believe the outcome of which can be used to manipulate their agenda, or can be used to prop up their military position, or can be used in support their "shaping of public opinion" to engineer the thinking of the masses. This is sad for science and all that it could provide.
