When a steel bar is moved closer to a magnet, it becomes magnetized due to the alignment of its internal magnetic domains. The magnetic field of the magnet causes these domains, which are normally random, to align in the direction of the magnetic field. As a result, the steel bar itself starts to exhibit magnetic properties and can attract ferromagnetic materials or other magnets.
