What are the alternatives to the use of chlorine and what impact do these alternatives have on human health and development?

we are using chlorine to eliminate the impurities like bacteria,virus..etc.This chlorine when mixed with water it reacts with chemicals present in the water and form byproducts like trihalomethane,chloramines,tri chloro aceticacid and when we drink this chlorinated water its affects human health.
